Sarracenia x 'alucard' is an officially registered cultivar but in the form of a 'grex', meaning that any seedling from the cross between a rubricorpora and a 'Royal Ruby' can technically be considered 'Alucard', as long as it fits the general description of the cultivar. The plant registrant allowed this distinction from the usual single cultivars registered because there was a certain homogeneity in the seedlings produced (simply put: big red plants).
Among this original cross made by Phil Faulisi, 2 clones stood out for their remarkable characteristics:
- The "Select" here present and selected by Mike Wang
- The "Prince of Darkness"
The "Prince of Darkness" version here is an exceptional plant in a collection. When you see it for the first time, it is hard to have a more attractive plant at the top of your "Most Wanted List". This was in any case my personal case. Darker in the middle of the season than the "Select" and with a different shape, PoD rises like the Prince of Darkness to overlook your entire collection with its darkness.
Believe me, this plant can put a smile back on your face after the dullest of your days.
Like the "Select", "Prince of Darkness" will reveal its full potential by letting it establish itself well for several seasons (between 3 and 5) in its pot. But the wait is truly rewarded by its unique and exceptional characteristics.
