Collection: *Sarracenia purpurea*

The Sarracenia purpurea distinguishes itself from all other Sarracenia by an anatomical feature unique to the genus: where other species have an operculum that protects them from rain, here the lid remains upright and allows water to accumulate inside the pitchers. Its traps, arranged in a rosette lying flat on the ground rather than in upright pitchers, give it a silhouette that is immediately recognizable among Sarracenia.

It is also the species in the genus with the widest distribution range: it is found from Canada to the southeastern United States, divided into two subspecies—a northern form and a southern, stockier form, which coexists with other Sarracenia in wetlands. Notably: in France, following an accidental introduction, it has even become locally naturalized, particularly in a peat bog in the Doubs region where it has become invasive.

Inside the trap, insects attracted by the color and nectar are gradually drawn downwards by a multitude of downward-pointing hairs, before drowning in the liquid accumulated at the bottom of the pitcher—a capture method quite different from the simple dry fall of species with upright traps.

The flowers, carried on long stalks that extend well beyond the foliage, range from purple to dark red or, more rarely, yellow depending on the form.

Undemanding, it is grown like other Sarracenia but appreciates a pot that is wider than it is tall, kept with a generous water level.
