Collection: Sarracenia flava

Sarracenia flava is a species of carnivorous pitcher plant in the genus Sarracenia.

Native to the southeastern United States (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas), it forms long, upright tubular traps, ranging from green to dark red with numerous color and veining variations, which can exceed 60 to 80 cm in height depending on the variety.

Its trap leaves capture insects and wasps using a sugary nectar. Then, downward-pointing micro-hairs and a slippery waxy wall prevent any escape. The insect becomes exhausted and ends up digested by the digestive juices secreted inside the leaves.

Easy to grow for a motivated beginner, Sarracenia flava appreciates full sun, a poor, acidic substrate (sphagnum peat moss and perlite), watering exclusively with rainwater or demineralized water, and a winter dormancy period essential for its spring flowering.
