Sarracenia x farnhamii

Sarracenia x farnhamii is a natural hybrid between S. leucophylla and S. rubra, common where the two species coexist in the wild. It inherits a mix of characteristic traits: the translucent windows of leucophylla combine with the intense color of rubra to produce upright, medium-sized pitchers that are green at the base and heavily veined with bright red.

Its particularity lies in its seasonality: while the spring growth is already attractive, it is especially in autumn that the plant is at its best, with pitchers turning a deep red, almost garnet, as the cold approaches—a trait inherited from its leucophylla parentage. Its dark red flowers appear early in spring, before the full emergence of the new pitchers.

Vigorous and easy to grow, Sarracenia x farnhamii quickly forms beautiful pitchers in both peat bogs and pots, and tolerates cold well once established.
